All The Machines I Use

I was thinking today about my sewing machines….. all four of them.
I was thinking about whether or not I should sell off two or three of the ones that I use intermittently. You see…… Lately I’ve got my sights set on buying a Singer Featherweight.

Join the crowd, right?
I KNOW! I’ve been looking around to see what all the hubbub is about these machines and from what I gather, they sew like a dream. AND they’re portable. AND they are just so cool looking. I’m thinking that I could use the Featherweight for machine piecing and for on-the-go sewing. But I don’t know…. Maybe the Featherweights are overrated. Maybe what I’ve already got is all I really need.

And that, my few but very important readers, is what I need help with.
Should I sell out and get the Featherweight as my second machine? Or should I keep what I’ve got because what I’ve got FAR surpasses a Featherweight any day of the week?

These are my current machines:

  • The vintage New Home sewing machine that I haven’t used for about six and a half years.
Vintage New Home sewing machine circa 1949-ish
I love it because it was my first machine. And because I bought it on my own with no help from any “grown-up”. I’m also really hip to the whole “vintage” thing.
  • My Bernette 75 that the MIL gave me when we were going to our first beginners quilt class together.

I remember feeling so grateful for such a nice machine. I also remember thinking that the machine was probably very expensive and that I must take good care of it. I have created the majority of my quilts on this machine. This machine has gone with me to every quilt class that I have ever been to. The only thing I have ever complained about regarding this machine is that it is loud. That’s it. Other than that I really like this machine.
  • My old Singer 6268 that used to be Tyson’s Grandma Ida Mae’s.

My MIL and her sister, Aunt Myrtle, gave me this machine and, once again, I felt so grateful. Tyson’s Grandma is, in my world, famous for her sewing abilities. So when I was given her machine I felt honored… in a weird sort of way. I have NEVER sewed on it though because I have never had the available cash to get it serviced. I want to sew on it…. The machine has so many fun embroidery options that I would L.O.V.E. to play with. I just need to find the cash to get it properly serviced.
  • The up-up-scale, hand-me-down Bernina 1011 that my MIL gave me for Christmas a year and a half ago.
    Bernina 1011
What a HAPPY Christmas that was for me. The machine used to be the MIL’s and it sews amazingly. It is, by far, the best machine that I have ever sewed on. I love it and there is NO way that I would sell this one…. Unless, of course, I were to be getting the Bernina Aurora 440 QE. THEN I would be willing to part with this fabuloh-so machine. But who could blame me?!?

Well. After writing about this and playing with my existing machines I have almost, maybe, probably decided that I cannot sell any of them.
I guess that means that I’ll just have to ADD the Featherweight as the fifth member of my sewing machine library.

What d’ya think?

By the way…. If you are wondering what websites that are igniting my burn to have a Featherweight, they are:
